GEO: London -Study Abroad Programs in London

Individual programs available to non-UO students include:

  Liberal Arts in London with Internship: Building on a quarter-century of academic excellence, the London Centre offers multi-disciplinary courses in the liberal arts and humanities with an emphasis on experiential learning supplemented by local outings and excursions. Internship placements are also available to qualified students who are committed to gaining a unique perspective into British life. The internship placement contains both the practical element of working in the organization and a reflective element, through the accompanying Internship Seminar. In addition to the internship placement, you will enroll in two to three other GEO courses. If you plan to enroll in an internship placement you will need to be flexible and committed to the internship schedule and responsibilities entailed from both a professional and personal standpoint. Because of the time commitment required, you may sometimes have to forgo a program activity or excursion in order to fulfill your responsibilities to the organization. PLEASE NOTE: Visa is required for internship students.

  English Spring in London: Building on a quarter-century of academic excellence, the London Centre offers multi-disciplinary courses in the liberal arts and humanities. Each course places an important emphasis on experiential learning, transforming the entire city of London into your classroom by incorporating several local outings and excursions. Courses take advantage of the world class galleries and museums like the National Portrait Gallery, Tate Modern, the Cabinet War Rooms, the Churchill Museums and, of course, the British Museum, which is just a short walk from the GEO London Centre. Each term, students have the opportunity to experience London’s rich theater options, from the West End productions to smaller, fringe productions with big name actors like Sir Ian McKellen, Dame Judi Dench and Sir Patrick Stewart, as well as younger stars like David Tennant and Benedict Cumberbatch.

  Theatre in London: London in spring is the setting for this program, which provides extensive exposure to the performing arts in England through critical study and attendance at numerous performances. Undergraduate and graduate theatre arts students in good standing, and others generally interested in the study of theatre, are welcome to apply. Theatre in London is an intensive theatre arts program that includes 12 to 16 credits over nine weeks. It is led by a University of Oregon theatre arts professor and also includes instruction by teaching professionals from various London theatre schools. You will attend up to 40 performances throughout London’s theatres, concert and dance halls, and in Stratford-upon-Avon.

  International Sport Facilities Management in London: The International Sport Facilities Management program takes you on an exciting journey through the vibrant sport culture of London, aiming to help you master the art of planning, organizing, budgeting, and marketing an event experience. Daniel G. Kelly II, associate professor and director of sport management at Wilmington College, will teach International Facility and Event Management on the program. The course focuses on the master planning process, a program of requirements for indoor and outdoor facilities, and design trends.

  Journalism in London: Immerse yourself in the communications and media scene in London during this five-week summer program. Designed to take advantage of opportunities for you to experience some of the unique communication headquarters in London, excursions include visits to BBC Television and Radio, the ITN News Headquarters and attendance at major political and art events held throughout the summer. Courses are designed with special emphasis on journalistic skill building as well as theoretical analytical components. You will live in an international residence hall near the GEO London Centre, and a local transportation pass (Oyster Card), valid for zones one and two, will be provided to you.

  The Genius of Study Abroad: A Tale of Two Cities, London and Paris: Revolutionary imagination—for how we see our world and live in it—is the focus of “The Genius of Study Abroad” (also known as the "Two Cities" program), a dynamic two-part, two-cities study abroad experience of active, activist global learning. Framed by two plays and two iconic novels about the two cities, London and Paris, the course lenses of phenomenal art, architecture, science, literature, landscape design, and philosophy of human rights and freedom, reveal the inspiring role of interdisciplinary and international experience—and yes, culture shock—for creativity.
