About
Course Topic: TRADE AND DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS OF MEXICO IN TIMES OF WAR (link course outline)
May 29th – June 16th, 2023 (3 weeks); optional extension for 2 additional weeks
In contemporary Mexican culture and society, it is still possible to distinguish forms, attitudes and manifestations of the distant, and not too distant past. The course aims to highlight these reflections of the past in today's world through the visual and performative arts. Both in class work and during the field trips through Mexico City this persistence will become evident.
The three-week course will be divided into four main topics:
1. The original cultures of Mesoamerica
2. The viceroyalty of New Spain
3. Independent Mexico
4. Towards modernity and the contemporary world
During the theoretical sessions, the class topics will cover the historical and social contexts of each period, together with its visual and performative manifestations. These manifestations will mainly include painting, sculpture and architecture, as well as rituals, feasts, celebrations, and pilgrimages. For the fourth topic, photography and cinema may be included. One day of each week will be dedicated to a field visit to some venues and spaces studied during the week, and every Saturday a cultural excursion will complement the program.
