Spending a semester abroad was more than just taking courses in another country for a couple of months. The experience impacted me in every way imaginable. I experienced the unknown a lot while I was abroad – public transportation, Kiwi slang, Māori language and culture, Tim Tam Slams – and each of these experiences is a memory ... I learned how to be more independent; especially when I travelled by myself. I learned how to engage with other cultures and peoples. I also think that through studying abroad I gained a greater appreciation of how connected the world is. Lucas Tomhave - Gustavus Adolphus College View Entire Review
I learned how to be an independent person in the world, and how to navigate life without anyone really holding my hand! Tess Vande Creek - University of Rochester View Entire Review
I didn't know anybody when going into the program and left with so so many new friendships, many of which will last forever. I learned to step out of my comfort zone and speak to people you don't know. I became pretty proficient in backpacking and planning travel/hikes. My semester studying abroad at University of Canterbury through IES Abroad was one long road trip, both literally and figuratively speaking. Literally, it was a semester full of spontaneous weekend (and weekday, sometimes) road trips. These trips taught me so much about myself, about others, and about this incredible, diverse co... I gained a lot of understanding of New Zealand culture. I also learned a lot about myself by traveling half way around the world! It was definitely very worthwhile. Amanda - Skidmore College View Entire Review
The best thing I gained from my semester in Christchurch was definitely independence. Although I spent a lot of time in Christchurch and traveling with friends I made, I also did some solo travel. In preparation for that, it is entirely your responsibility to plan and figure out what you will do. If there are things going on bac... A student - Skidmore College View Entire Review
Specifically thinking about differences between my home uni and UC, I learned that just because I have been taught to learn one way does not mean that is the only way. Although it was tricky to adjust to UC's system at first, ultimately I came away from the semester with good grades and a new appreciation for how large universit... I learned so much about myself and the world, and would do it over and over again! Sam S - Hope College View Entire Review
I spent the fall semester of my junior year in Christchurch, and I regard it as one of the best experiences of my life. The social climate and way of life is laid back and foreigners are welcomed with genuine friendliness. Kiwis are extremely hospitable and outgoing people; I found getting to know them really enriched my experie... Alexandra K - University of Rochester View Entire Review
Be prepared for a fun adventure every single weekend, the best scenery of your life, and being pushed way outside of your comfort zone in the best way possible. I accomplished many feats I never thought I would, made lifelong friendships, and enjoyed every second of being in a new country with a new culture. Work hard play hard ... As cliche as it may be, I learned to seize the day. Each day in New Zealand, I felt like I needed to go out and explore and just make the most of the day. Being so blessed to have the opportunity to study in such a beautiful country, I knew that I should not take any day for granted. Camille Natividad - Indiana University - Bloomington View Entire Review
Besides the lifelong friendships, connections, and memories that I created, perspective is the greatest gift that I came away from this trip with. When I first started telling people that I was going to study abroad in New Zealand, the primary responses I got were “Wow, that’s so far away!” and “You’re choosing to go to the oth... I gained complete confidence in my ability to take risks and go out on my own and explore. I've gained a new sense of adventure, and I have IES to thank for that. Tovah Klein - The College of William and Mary View Entire Review
It was absolutely worthwhile! I learned much more about myself and about the world than the content taught in my courses could have showed me. During breathtaking hikes, I had long moments of silence and reflection. During transiting experiences (that I was not used to because I have always had a car), I became more comforta... My study abroad experience was incredibly worthwhile! I am so happy I decided to do it, as I experienced large amounts of growth in a multitude of ways. As cliche as it sounds, I did gain more independence than I previously had, primarily because you must take initiative yourself, there's less of a parental buffer and autonomy d... I learned that I want to live abroad. Everyone abroad is so well-traveled and worldly than Americans. I realized that I can be independent, even when I am all the way around the world from my friends and family. Bethany M - Ithaca College View Entire Review
