Oh my word, I learned so much. I learned about more about my identity as an American and as a woman. I learned about racism/race that wasn't in an American context. I learned about Afro-centric history. I learned what amazing and difficult things can occur when 10 American girls live in a house in South Africa together. I learne... I learned how to be empathetic an a good listener at my internship. I learned how to reflect and break down things that are happening around me. I learned that I wanted a career in the non-profit sector. I learned about a new culture and how to properly adjust to differences around me. Clare - Marquette University View Entire Review
I gained a great deal of cultural competence as well as personal confidence through this program. I learned so much about the contemporary issues that South Africa faces as a result of its past and drew parallels with similar issues of race, class and gender in the U.S. as well. All of these lessons and personal improvements mad... Kelly Allyn Cruchett - University of San Francisco View Entire Review
There are so many things that I gained from my experience. Living in a part of the world that was so different than what I was accustomed to was extremely eye opening. About
Marquette University South Africa Service Learning Program is based in cosmopolitan Cape Town, at the southern tip of the African continent.
The people of South Africa call their country the Rainbow Nation to demonstrate pride in their racial, ethnic and linguistic diversity. The country has 11 official languages. In the Cape Town area, you will predominantly hear Xhosa, Afrikaans and English.
While living in Cape Town, you will become acquainted with South Africa's rich history and see firsthand how the country is rebuilding itself after decades of government-enforced apartheid. Cape Town's diverse socioeconomic communities will become your classroom and its leaders your teachers.
The program offers students the unique opportunity to pursue a dual path of academic coursework and real-world learning. While attending weekly classes at the University of the Western Cape, a university which played a key role in ending apartheid, you will also work two days a week at a local nonprofit organization, putting your education to work to address global challenges. These service learning sites will give you the opportunity to make a difference in the ongoing transformation of South Africa by working on community education, health issues, gender inequities, sustainable living and youth education.
You will live with fellow program participants in the Kimberely House in the Observatory neighborhood of Cape Town. Known locally as "Obs," the neighborhood is an intimate community with great energy and a lively atmosphere.
You will also have the opportunity to visit significant South African historical and cultural sites, such as Table Mountain, District 6 in the city's center, and Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners were incarcerated during apartheid. In addition to a spectacular array of wildlife unique to South Africa, you will experience powerful literary and artistic voices, traditional music, delicious food, and diverse architecture.
