About

NIRMAN aims at global exchange and producing a global citizen for the 21st century. Undergraduates are invited to explore aspects of India as part of a unified world, while going deep into the rootedness of Indian people, languages, and cultures.

NIRMAN’s philosophy is an ambitious non-dualistic one. It provides a context to merge high philosophy with popular culture, theory with practice, traditional arts with modern technologies, global contexts with small town individuals, and strict discipline with freedom. NIRMAN strives for one simple goal: an intellectual sophistication that is extraordinarily creative because it is truly humanitarian.

NIRMAN is a 25 years old research-based NGO that offers a choice of courses in history, education, sociology, anthropology, politics, literature, gender, fine and performing arts. Internships in a range of topics are integrated into course work. The special strengths of Varanasi as a site of ethnographic study are combined with rigorous classroom work and personal care of students.

NIRMAN offer the following programs:

  • Semester Program (Fall/Monsoon, and Spring): 15 weeks, 4 courses, 45 hours per course. Each course is worth 3 credits, totalling 12-15 credits per semester.

  • Quarter Program: 10 weeks, 3 courses, 35 hours per course. Each course is worth 3 credits, totalling 9 per semester.

  • Intensive Program: 3-4 weeks, 2 courses, 35 hours per course Each course is worth 3 credits, totalling 6 per intensive.
