It was definitely worthwhile for me. I took classes I would never have taken at UT (I am an engineering major) and I really challenged myself academically that way. I learned that American culture is limited in comparison to cultures that have existed for thousands of years. The problems we have with racism and violence do not exist to the degree we have grown to accept.
