About

The Washburn University School of Law Summer Study Abroad Program provides students an opportunity to understand their legal systems more fully through comparative study of the Caribbean system, all while living in a stimulating West Indian university environment.

Washburn Law has a long history of successful summer study abroad programs, dating back to 1968. The current program is located on the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies in Barbados. Our program uses a comparative model and takes advantage of co-teaching by University of the West Indies and Washburn law faculty members, in addition to enrolling law students from the University of the West Indies. Students may earn six hours of academic credit. Specific courses vary from year to year.

The curriculum uses both traditional classroom methods and site visits to observe relevant legal institutions in action. Students have found that the opportunity to study law in the Summer Study Abroad Program not only enhances their legal studies, but enables them to learn about and enjoy the rich heritage of Caribbean cultures, as well as to develop cross-cultural skills for law practice.
