About

Nishinomiya, Japan is an ideal location for learning how to teach English as a second language and discovering the wonders of Japanese culture.  Nishinomiya, a city located in the Hyogo Prefecture between the cities of Osaka and Kobe, is a sister city to Spokane, WA.WSU College of Education has had a long and beneficial partnership with the Nishinomiya Board of Education and its schools.  For 27 years, faculty, staff, and students have visited, lived, done research, and lectured in the city of Nishinomiya.  Throughout those years WSU has hosted many educators and administrators at our campuses in Pullman, Spokane, and Vancouver. 

Through this transformative and life-changing experience, prospective students will:


  • Complete 6 credits towards their degree (graduate or undergraduate) and/or area of specialization (ESL/EFL)

  • Learn about Japanese rich culture, history and language

  • Be immersed in Japanese culture

  • Practice teaching English as a second language

  • Learn about the challenges of functioning in a different linguistic and cultural environment

  • Engage with, and understand, Japanese culture and society at fairly sophisticated and complex level
